You know when the Unabomber was fighting his one man crusade against technology I said that perhaps history would view him more as a hero along the lines of Don Quixote than as a serial killing maniac. This story reinforces that belief:

    Big Brother is watching

RFID tags are everywhere, they're just talking about more advanced versions. Walmart has been a leader in this, here's a slide show from over two years ago:

I don't know what the heck you're complaining about - conservatives determined long ago there should be virtually no limit to Gov't surveillance in the war on terror and anyone who disagrees is a treasonous suicide-bomber-lover who should be waterboarded.

Great Britain is the most watched, spied upon nation in the western world, with personal liberties almost completely gone. They long ago turned their backs on individuality and personal initiative in favor of the nanny state, socialist cradle-to-grave coddling aka enslavement that has made the isle one big prison. So please, don't make this a conservative/liberal argument. The terms are antiquated anyway. In the US "conservatives" are no longer anything resembling the term and face it, "liberals" are socialists too afraid to admit their real ideology.

I'm going to agree with Lan in principle on this one. You may recall in years past I have complained on this board about things such as the sex offender registries. And it wasn't because I was worried about sex offenders, but I saw such things as a dangerous extension of governmental powers. And I have always believed that, once the flood gates open, you can't shut them.

The government used 9/11 as an excuse to further extend itself. We need all these incursions into our liberties in the name of "homeland security."

Well, congratulations. I hope everyone's happy with it.

Although, let's not kid ourselves- people get over it and used to it rather quickly. Think about gas prices. A few years ago, everyone was whining and it was a hot-button issue. Now, we've just come to accept it, it's on no one's radar screen.

Same thing with all this spy technology. People my age and older may have a rough transition at first because we remember the "good old days" when you didn't have all this crap. But think about kids today- the wi-fi world is the only one they'll have known. There won't be a time they can remember where there weren't traffic cameras. And as a result, they won't care.

I was leaving Wal-Mart not too long ago and the greeter stops me on the way out and asks to look into my bag and check the receipt. Obviously I just want to get home so I agree. But the fact is, if I wasn't such a wuss, I should have objected. The fact is, unless they have cause to believe that you've stolen something, you don't have to let them search anything. But, suppose I tell them that. Then the next thing you know, they call the police, and I've made a mountain out of a molehill. So I, just like everyone else, allowed them to search the bag.

It's little things like this that can add-up, though.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">WalMart has been uncharacteristically unsuccessful in implementing the RFID thingy. They have begun to lose some of their clout and suppliers are beginning to fight back.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Let me get this straight...you think your gov't can't figure out what you're doing practically every minute of your day?

    Puhleeze.

You remind me of neighborhood activists indignant over the idea of streetcams installed to deter crime. I thought to myself, "What a bunch of selective perception huey."
